Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee Advances Speaker Fecteau’s Bill to Protect Health Care for Maine People
LD 2208 Would Offset Federal Cuts to Health Insurance and Lower Costs
AUGUSTA – The Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee yesterday voted 6-5 in support of an amended version of LD 2208, An Act to Offset Federal Cuts to Health Insurance for Certain Maine Families and Seniors, proposed by Speaker Ryan D. Fecteau (D-Biddeford). The bill will take critical steps to protect Mainers from federal cuts that will impact families, businesses, and the state’s entire health care system.
“I am grateful that a majority of the committee voted to support and protect the health of Maine people,” said Speaker Fecteau. “Trump’s ‘Big Bad Bill’ has already hurt Maine families, but my proposal will make sure as many of our neighbors as possible can afford health insurance and get the care they need. It will also make sure rural hospitals can keep services going or bring back services like maternity care. Mainers deserve healthcare. Mainers deserve access to hospitals. Mainers deserve a Big Beautiful Healthcare bill.”
The amended bill will:
Provide funding to strengthen Maine’s rural healthcare system and support long-term affordability
Establish a state-funded health insurance subsidy on CoverME.gov to make up for the loss of federal tax credit dollars
Create the MaineCare Federal Response Fund to respond to federal cuts to funding for the MaineCare program
Provide ongoing funding to the State reinsurance program to lower health insurance costs for individuals and businesses across Maine
“We are thrilled to see LD 2208 advance,” said Kate Ende, Policy Director with Consumers for Affordable Health Care (CAHC). “Health insurance premiums have skyrocketed. Mainers need relief and they need it now. LD 2208 will help reduce premium costs and ensure more Maine people can afford the health coverage they need and deserve.”
Rep. Kristi Mathieson, Chair of the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee and a cosponsor of the bill, said the legislation takes direct aim at soaring premiums and bolsters rural health systems, critical moves to ensure Maine people can actually afford and access the care they deserve.
“With costs climbing and healthcare growing harder to find in rural communities, the Speaker’s proposal lands at exactly the right moment,” said Rep. Mathieson. “I'm thrilled a majority of the committee voted to push this measure forward.”
LD 2208 will head to the House and Senate for additional votes in the coming weeks.
